Kyle’s Story
Born and raised in Sonoma County, Kyle was the kind of person who was never meant to sit still. From the time he was young, he was always moving, building, competing, learning, planning the next adventure, or finding a new challenge. He had an energy that filled a room and a rare ability to connect with just about anyone he met.
Eventually, that energy found its purpose in the fire service.
Kyle proudly served the Rancho Adobe Fire District for 21 years, ultimately earning the rank of Captain. He responded to emergencies throughout Sonoma County, deployed on strike teams to some of California’s most devastating wildfires, trained new firefighters, and became a trusted mentor and leader within his department.
One of Kyle’s greatest passions within the fire service was exercise, health, and wellness. He was constantly researching ways firefighters could become stronger, healthier, and more resilient. He participated in fitness challenges not because he needed to win, but because he wanted to motivate the people around him. Kyle understood that taking care of responders meant giving them the tools, resources, support, and encouragement to take care of themselves before they reached a crisis.
But the fire service was only one part of who Kyle was. He was a husband, a dad, a son, a brother, a coach, a loyal friend, an athlete, an adventurer, a backyard BBQ enthusiast and self-proclaimed smoked-meat master. He loved camping, hiking, cycling, game nights, Bay Area sports, starting projects, dreaming up new ideas, and convincing his family that whatever he had just discovered was absolutely something they needed to do.
Above everything else, Kyle loved his family.
Rachael, Logan, and Parker were his world. After nearly two decades together, Kyle and Rachael had built a life centered around their boys, their family, their friends, the fire service, and their Sonoma County community. In the final year of his life, Kyle even sold his business, Bennett Valley Blinds, because he wanted more time at home. He wanted to coach more games, take more trips, be there for the everyday moments, and watch his boys grow up.
On August 16, 2024, Kyle died unexpectedly from a cardiac event at just 43 years old.
His loss left an immeasurable hole in his family, his department, and the community that loved him. But it also made painfully clear just how many lives one person can touch.
Creating Kyle’s Legacy
The Kyle Heard Foundation was created so that Kyle’s story would not end with his death.
It carries forward the things he cared deeply about: first responders, health and wellness, family, community, and taking care of people before they reach their breaking point.
Through the Foundation, Kyle’s commitment to preventative wellness becomes access to resources for responders and their families. His instinct to take care of his people becomes support for families navigating difficult seasons. And the loyalty he showed throughout his life becomes a promise that responders and their families do not have to navigate those hard moments alone.
For Kyle’s family, this work is deeply personal. It is a way for his children to grow up seeing not only how their dad died, but how he lived, and how much his life mattered. After spending over a year navigating the logistics of LODD benefits, Calpers, therapies, insurances, and applying for resources, Kyle’s family wants to make that process a little easier for someone going through it alone. The foundation hopes to be a beacon of support, a place for connection, an extension of family.
Kyle spent his life showing up for people when they needed it. Now, in his name, we will keep showing up for them.
